AI4Energy

AI4Energy is a cross-cutting research and talent-cultivation program of the Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern University. The initiative brings together artificial intelligence, advanced computation, quantum, nanoscience, automated experimentation, and energy-domain expertise to accelerate the discovery and deployment of solutions to major sustainability and energy challenges.

Accelerating Discovery

Rather than operating as a stand-alone research pillar, AI4Energy connects across the research portfolio. It supports researchers working to generate abundant and reliable low-carbon electricity, store electricity at scale more cost-effectively, transform waste feedstocks into valuable fuels, chemicals and materials, and capture and recover critical minerals and materials. By embedding AI capabilities across these areas, the program aims to increase automation, lever closed-loop rapid discovery, and help researchers integrate insights from large and complex datasets and shorten the path from scientific question to experimentally validated solution.

AI4Energy draws on Northwestern’s strengths in agentic AI, machine learning, materials science, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and nanotechnology. Research includes scientific LLMs, agentic AI, high-throughput computation, autonomous laboratories, and nanomaterial megalibraries that enable large numbers of materials to be synthesized, characterized, and evaluated. These tools are applied across the Institute’s research pillars—for example, to discover materials that withstand the extreme conditions required for geothermal and advanced nuclear energy, develop next-generation batteries, improve methods for extracting lithium and rare earth elements, or design more efficient catalysts and separation technologies.

Fostering Collaboration and Developing Talent

AI4Energy will further build Northwestern’s interdisciplinary community in which AI researchers, experimental scientists, and energy experts work together from the outset. The program also provides a foundation for deepened collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory as well as a growing set of industry partners. Northwestern and Argonne have identified AI4Energy as an area of complementary strength, with opportunities for joint research, shared scientific programming, personnel exchanges, and coordinated pursuit of government and industry funding.

The AI4Energy IIN/Trienens Fellowship program is a locus of talent development. The program is a collaboration between the Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy and Northwestern’s International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN). It supports exceptional early-career researchers conducting work at the intersection of AI, nanoscience and energy-relevant materials and systems. Each fellow is jointly mentored by two Northwestern faculty members—one contributing expertise in AI, machine learning or computational methods and another providing expertise in energy, materials, nanoscience or chemical systems.

AI4Energy will encompass a broader set of coordinated activities, including collaborative research projects, faculty and student working groups, workshops, shared computational and experimental resources, and industry and national-laboratory partnerships. Working in concert with the Institute’s SCALE platform, AI4Energy will help researchers assess the promise of an emerging technology and evaluate its potential for achieving meaningful environmental, economic, and societal impact at scale.

AI4Energy will position Northwestern to continue to lead at the convergence of AI and energy science—developing new research capabilities, training interdisciplinary scientific leaders, and accelerating innovations that advance energy abundance, resilience, sustainability, and stewardship of the planet.
