Northwestern-Hamburg Exchange Program

About the Northwestern-Hamburg Exchange Program

Part of Northwestern University's effort to advance international collaboration, Northwestern and the University of Hamburg in Germany are engaged in an ongoing partnership to drive student research and propel efforts to combat climate change. The Trienens Institute is now inviting students and faculty from both institutions to apply to participate in the exchange.

Led by Professor Matthew Grayson, director of the Northwestern Engineering Global Initiatives Four Corners program, the Northwestern-Hamburg Exchange Program is supported by the Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy.

In its inaugural year, Northwestern hosted a graduate student from the University of Hamburg’s renowned Integrated Climate Systems Science (ICSS) program to complete a three-month research study. The project focused on tracking health impacts and heat vulnerability in both Chicago and Hamburg. Read more about the ongoing partnership.

“Collaboration in science, particularly when attempting to solve society’s most challenging problems, is essential...We are two universities with different strengths and talented students who could benefit from ongoing exchange.” - Professor Daniel Horton
