Research Interests
My research is grounded in stratigraphy, in particular the relationship between rocks and time. Much of my effort has been directed at development of high-resolution time scales for ancient stratigraphic sequences through the application of cyclostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic techniques. The driving motivation for improved time scales builds from my other main research interest, understanding the processes controlling burial of carbon in ancient sediments and the relationships between changes in the global carbon cycle and ocean-climate interactions. A particular emphasis of my work has been Phanerozoic ocean anoxic events and I have devoted most of my career to study of the Western Interior basin of North America.
