Midwest Nuclear Direct Air Capture Hub

About Midwest Nuclear Direct Air Capture Hub

The Midwest Nuclear Direct Air Capture Hub (MINDAC) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Regional Direct Air Capture Hub (DAC). The Northwestern-led program unites a diverse group of research and commercial partner institutions to test the feasibility of using a zero-emission nuclear fleet to power air handling units that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

DAC hubs are a central part of the U.S. DOE efforts to demonstrate the capture, processing, delivery and sequestration or end-use plans for captured carbon. MINDAC is a two-year feasibility project that began in May 2024. Due to Illinois’ high rates of CO₂ emissions and the abundance of nuclear power in the state, the Midwestern region is a fitting location for this study.
